🧠 Background
Dr David Peltier DC didn’t simply choose chiropractic as a profession. Chiropractic became part of the fabric of his family and his life.
His introduction came while he was still young. He had experienced recurring health problems, including repeated strep throat, antibiotics, and eventually having his tonsils removed—yet the problem returned. Then his future brother-in-law, a principled chiropractor, introduced him and his family to a different way of looking at health. He checked David’s nervous system and began adjusting him.
That experience changed more than how David felt. It changed how he thought.
He saw the way his brother-in-law cared for people, the relationships he built with patients, and what David describes as the “miracles” taking place in the office. He decided he wanted to become a chiropractor himself.
That decision eventually became a family legacy.
Today, Dr Peltier counts nine chiropractors in his extended family, including brothers, daughters, and great-nephews. Chiropractic became so deeply woven into family life that conversations around the dinner table could turn into chiropractic seminars.
After 33 years in practice, Dr Peltier doesn’t describe himself as simply retired. He says he is reinventing himself.
That reinvention includes mentoring younger chiropractors and students and participating in chiropractic mission work in Honduras. There, students can adjust large numbers of people, develop their hands, discuss philosophy and technique, and experience chiropractic stripped of many of the distractions surrounding modern practice.
Through every stage of the story runs one principle:
Get the Big Idea—and everything else follows.

📖 Summary
What happens when one adjustment doesn’t just influence one patient—but helps shape generations?
Dr David Peltier DC joins James Chester for Episode 810 of the Chiro Hustle Podcast to tell a story that begins with his own introduction to principled chiropractic and ultimately expands into a family containing nine chiropractors.
At the center of the conversation is what Dr Peltier calls the essential advice for chiropractic students: “Get the Big Idea.” For him, philosophy isn’t decoration around chiropractic. It provides the foundation for certainty, technique, service, and professional identity. Episode 810 – David Peltier DC …
Dr Peltier also shares how mentors shaped his career, why chiropractors need involvement beyond their own practices, and how mission work in Honduras gave students the opportunity to adjust, serve, learn, and develop confidence in their hands.
Now retired from full-time practice after 33 years, he sees the next chapter not as retirement but reinvention—mentoring younger chiropractors, helping his chiropractic family succeed, and continuing to serve.
This episode asks a fundamental question: What happens to chiropractic when one generation intentionally passes the Big Idea to the next?
🔍 Diving In
There is a striking progression in Dr David Peltier’s story:
- He received chiropractic.
- He practiced chiropractic.
- He raised chiropractic.
- Now he is passing chiropractic on.
His story begins as a young person growing up in what he describes as a medically oriented family. Recurring strep throat had brought repeated medical intervention, including antibiotics and tonsil removal. His future brother-in-law introduced something different: chiropractic, the nervous system, and a principled understanding of the body.
David began getting adjusted and noticed changes. More importantly, he began watching what happened inside a chiropractic office.
He saw patients being cared for. He saw the relationship between chiropractor and patient. He saw outcomes that captured his imagination.
And he decided: I’m going to be a chiropractor someday. Episode 810 – David Peltier DC …
The Big Idea Becomes the Foundation
- Decades later, when asked what advice he would give chiropractic students, Dr Peltier already had his answer prepared:
Get the Big Idea.
- For him, that isn’t simply a historical chiropractic slogan. It is the organizing principle behind a chiropractor’s professional identity.
- Technique matters. Adjusting skill matters. Business matters. Mentorship matters.
- But philosophy answers the deeper question: Why are you doing what you are doing?
- Dr Peltier describes chiropractic as correcting subluxations rather than treating conditions. He speaks about innate intelligence and about the chiropractor staying within the chiropractic lane. That conviction, he argues, creates certainty in the chiropractor. Episode 810 – David Peltier DC …
- Without that distinction, chiropractic risks becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate from professions that also manipulate or work mechanically with the spine.
- That is why this conversation repeatedly returns to identity.
From One Chiropractor to Nine
- The Big Idea didn’t stop with David.
- His extended family ultimately grew to include nine chiropractors: his brother-in-law, brothers, daughters, great-nephews, and Dr Peltier himself. Even family members who did not enter the profession remained under chiropractic care.
- This may be the clearest demonstration of the episode’s larger lesson.
- An idea deeply understood doesn’t necessarily stay contained inside one practice.
- It travels.
- From chiropractor to patient.
- From parent to child.
- From mentor to student.
- From one generation to another. Episode 810 – David Peltier DC …
Certainty Through Service
- That same principle appears in Dr Peltier’s work in Honduras.
- After retirement, a longtime patient finally held him to an earlier promise to participate in a mission trip. Dr Peltier went to Honduras and spent the week doing something remarkably simple:
- Adjusting.
- He saw an opportunity not only to serve people but to bring students and other chiropractors with him.
- For students especially, the experience could be transformative. They could put their hands on far more people than they typically would in school, while learning technique and discussing chiropractic philosophy.
- Dr Peltier describes the mission environment as an opportunity to give for the sake of giving, love for the sake of loving, and serve for the sake of serving. Episode 810 – David Peltier DC …
- There is an important connection here.
- The Big Idea creates certainty.
- Certainty creates action.
- Repeated action develops skill.
- And service gives that skill purpose.
Retirement Becomes Reinvention
- After 33 years of practice, Dr Peltier could simply have walked away.
- Instead, he describes retirement as reinvention.
- He wants to mentor.
- He wants to help students.
- He wants to continue mission work.
- He helps younger members of his own family navigate practice.
- His influence is shifting from the number of spines he personally adjusts to the number of chiropractors he can help become more certain, capable, and principled. Episode 810 – David Peltier DC …
- That may ultimately be the most important legacy question raised in Episode 810.
- A chiropractor can serve thousands of people during a career.
- But what happens when that chiropractor teaches another generation to serve?
- The influence multiplies.
- That is the challenge behind this conversation for established chiropractors: Don’t allow what you learned over decades to retire when you do.
- And for students and younger chiropractors: Find the people who already walked the road.
- Ask questions.
- Learn technique.
- Study philosophy.
- Get involved.
- Serve.
- Develop certainty.
- And above all:
- Get the Big Idea.
⚡ Action Steps
- Get clear on the Big Idea. Know what distinguishes chiropractic and why you adjust.
- Study chiropractic philosophy intentionally. Don’t depend entirely on what your school or employer provides.
- Find a mentor. Seek someone whose philosophy, hands, practice, and character you respect.
- Develop certainty through repetition. Technique becomes stronger when knowledge and hands-on experience meet.
- Serve beyond your practice. Consider mission opportunities where your chiropractic skills can benefit others.
- Teach what you know. Experienced chiropractors should intentionally pass decades of knowledge to younger DCs.
- Get involved professionally. Participate in state, national, and philosophical chiropractic organizations.
- Stay in the chiropractic lane. Understand the distinction between correcting subluxation and simply performing spinal manipulation.
- Build a legacy beyond yourself. Teach your family, patients, students, associates, and colleagues the principles that shaped you.
- Reinvent rather than retire. Your greatest professional influence may come from the chiropractors you mentor after active practice ends.
